Winter Birdwatching in Costa Rica

Not many countries can boast 900+ different species of birds within their borders, but Costa Rica can!  Join Go Tico's Co-Director Johel for 11 amazing days observing some of the bird species found at unique destinations around the country: Rio Cuarto, Sarapiqui, La Fortuna, Monteverde (and then a nice wrap-up at one of our favorite beaches in Guanacaste).  This trip provides Go Tico's famous balance of cultural-immersion, tourism, and time to relax and just soak up the Costa Rican nature, hospitality, and beauty that surrounds each of the spots we visit.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: January 14

    • Arrive on a flight of your choosing to San Jose, Costa Rica and taxi to a nearby hotel to meet up with the group and Johel*

    • Dinner with group

    • Accommodations in Alajuela

  • Day 2: January 15​

    • Visit Poas Volcano National Park​
    • View La Paz Waterfall
    • Transport to host community​

    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    • Accommodations in La Flor 

  • Day 3: January 16

    • Early morning birdwatching tour at biological reserve

    • Guided Chocolate Tour

    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 4: January 17​

    • Local Thermal Waters Visit​

    • Optional Ziplining (additional cost)

    • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Day 5: January 18​

    • Guided Wildlife Boat Tour​

Tour Details

Trip dates: January 14 - 24, 2027

  • Guests are welcome to initiate or end their travel before or after the trip at their own expense​

  • Guests must be 15+ years old

  • All guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult

Registration Deadline: November 14, 2026

  • This trip has 11 spaces available.  A minimum of 9 participants must register for this trip to run.

Trip Cost: $3,300 per person

Trip Cost Includes:

  • Meals listed above (dietary accommodations can be made with advance notice at time of registration)

  • Accommodations for 10 nights in double-occupancy rooms with same gender

  • In-country transport as noted in itinerary

  • Go Tico! Costa Rica guide for entire trip

  • Guided tours at 5 locations

  • Visits to 2 volcanoes

  • Optional homestay with local family during days 2 -5 (limited availability, some Spanish-speaking ability required)
